Confessions
of an Opium Eater
Starring the great Vincent Price, this Albert
Zugsmith exploiter is very freely based
upon the book “Confessions of an Opium
Eater” by Thomas DeQuincey. Set in
San Francisco during the Tong Wars of the
1800s, women are sold as slaves by an evil
drug lord named Ling Tang. Price plays the
hero, DeQuincey, who is asked to find a
woman who has escaped the slave trade and
bring her back. He finds her and attempts
to escape with her, only to be discovered
and marked for death for his treachery.
In an effort to escape the wrath of Ling
Tang, DeQuincey hides out in Chinatown and
discovers the wonders of the Opium trade
and the drugs hallucinogenic effects. Filled
with absurd dialogue, Asian stereotypes,
and A-typical Zugsmith exploitation touches,
Confessions of an Opium Eater is a classic
of the early 60’s sleaze genre.
