HANNIBAL
BROOKS
Most road movies follow a similar formula,
but this 1969 film starring Oliver Reed
certainly paves its own path. Mixing comedy
with real drama and social commentary,
Hannibal Brooks is a rare breed of adventure
movie. A WWII prisoner of war (Oliver
Reed) working at a zoo gets the chance
to escape from the Germans, so he does
and he takes with him the elephant that
he’s been caring for. Together they
head for the Swiss border and freedom.
Also starring Michael J Pollard, James
Donald, Helmut Lohner and directed by
Michael Winner, who also directed Reed
in I’ll Never Forget What’s
‘is Name; Hannibal Brooks is a lost
film filled with charm, wit and excitement.
